      The region around Rotorua is geothermally active. Hence, there are quite a few thermal baths and parks.

      In Tongariro National Park, I got to know the New Zealand of my dreams for the first time: snow-covered mountains, green hills, and patchy grass in between.

      I only spent one day in the capital city Wellington, before taking the ferry to the South Island.

      For two days, I examined the Marlborough Sounds by kayak and on foot.

      In Kaikoura, I went on a whale watching trip.

      My first "Lord of the Rings" tour has led me to "Edoras" which is situated in a stunningly beautiful area.

      After spending two days in the city of Christchurch, I visited the Banks Peninsula during a one-day trip from the city.

  • December 3 – 6, 2008   –   Arthur's Pass

      The mountains around the Arthur's Pass Village have some great hikes to offer.

  • December 7, 2008   –   Inland Pack Track

      Parts of the Inland Pack Track are actually not a trail, but you have to walk directly through river beds.

  • December 8 – 10, 2008   –   West Coast Glaciers

      At the Franz Josef Glacier, I went on a full-day glacier hike.

  • December 11 – 14, 2008   –   Wanaka

      I really like Wanaka thanks to its location amidst some mountains at the shores of a lake.

      On the Otago Peninsula, I went on a wildlife tour.

  • December 17 – 19, 2008   –   Stewart Island

      On Stewart Island, I went on two guided tours as well. This made it possible to experience the nature and wildlife on this island even better.

      Te Anau is kind of the hiking capital of New Zealand.

      After hiking all the Milford Track within four days, I can say that it is indeed a Great Walk.

      In Queenstown I was really tempted to book one activity after the other.

  • December 30, 2008 – January 2, 2009   –   Mt Cook

      Also around Mt. Cook Village, I went on several hikes.

  • January 3, 2009   –   Lake Tekapo

      From Lake Tekapo, I explored the Southern Alps of New Zealand by plane.

  • January 4 – 5, 2009   –   Mt Taranaki

      The region of Taranaki gets its name from the perfectly cone-shaped volcano in its centre. For one day, I was hiking along the slopes of the mountain.

  • January 6, 2009   –   Otorohanga

      The town of Otorohanga is known for its Kiwi House where real kiwi birds are on display.

  • January 7 – 8, 2009   –   Waitomo

      The seven-hours-long "Lost World Epic" caving tour in Waitomo was a true highlight of my stay in New Zealand.
