Country Statistics

The following table shows the total duration and number of stays in the different countries of the world. I have decided to count the number of nights (i.e. overnight stays), as the definition of a "night" seems to be less confusing than the definition of a "day". For example, when arriving in a country at 8.00 a.m., and departing the next day at 8.00 p.m., are we talking about just one day or already two? The number of nights is much easier to count.

Of course, there are still some problems: What to do with nights spent aboard an airplane or a train travelling between two countries? Therefore, I introduced three categories which do not represent an actual country: "International Airspace" for nights aboard airplanes, "Ground Travel with Border Crossing" for nights aboard ground travel (currently just trains) on the way between two countries, and "International Date Line" for nights lost or gained due to crossing this line.

Geographic Records

In the following, I would like to give a short overview about my most "geographic records": What are the most northerly, southerly, easterly and westerly points on Earth I have ever been to (while not flying in an airplane)? Where is the highest and lowest point?

Unfortunately, even despite owning a GPS, I had to estimate all but my most southerly position. However, it is quite certain that I managed to get at least as far as shown in the table below.

Type Date Location Latitude Longitude
North May 23, 2005 Aboard Hurtigrute in Trondheimfjord, Norway  63° 38' 40'' North 9° 44' East
South Jan 20, 2008 Cruise on Beagle Channel, Argentina  54° 52' 22,08'' South 68° 5' 38,23'' West
East Oct 23, 2008 Nadi Airport, Fiji  17° 45' 19'' South 177° 26' 36'' East
West Jan 11, 2009 Aitutaki, Cook Islands  18° 54' 45'' South 159° 49' 40'' West

My altitude records shall be mentioned as well.

Type Date Location Altitude
Highest Elevation Mar 17, 2009 Volcán Irazú, Costa Rica  11260 Feet
Lowest Elevation Aug 16, 2003 Badwater Basin, Death Valley, CA, United States  -282 Feet
Highest climbed mountain Jan 05, 2008 Volcán Villarrica, Chile  9310 Feet
Deepest Dive Nov 01, 2008 Coral reef at Wayalailai, Fiji  -69 Feet

Finally, I would like to show my longest trips on land, on water, and in the air (measured as the crow flies).
