On occasion of today&#8217;s Austrian National Day, I would like to take a short (not quite serious) look on the Austrian way of life.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For that purpose, I would like to quote a short text that I wrote in French class during high school (some 15&nbsp;years ago):<\/p>\n<blockquote xml:lang=\"fr\" lang=\"fr\"><p>\nComment d\u00e9finir des gens&nbsp;&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n  dont presque les gens du monde entier sont s\u00fbr qu\u2019ils sont pratiquement les voisins des kangourous et des koalas et sur les\u00adquels le reste du monde sait de bonne source qu\u2019ils risquent d\u2019\u00e9touffer en hiver \u00e0 cause de la neige;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  qui passent l\u2019hiver entier en faisant du ski et le temps res\u00adtant dans une salle de concert en \u00e9coutant de la musique classique;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  qui com\u00admencent leur jour en jodlant pour quelques minutes devant leur chalet sur l\u2019al\u00adpage;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  qu\u2019on peut voir toujours en portant des pantalons en cuir et des dirndls;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  pour lesquels une ville avec plus d\u2019un million d\u2019habitants est une grande m\u00e9\u00adtropole;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  qui mangent du &quot;Wiener Schnitzel&quot; et de la &quot;Sachertorte&quot;&nbsp;&#8211; sept jours par semaine, trois fois par jour;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  qui plut\u00f4t perdent patience qu\u2019ils prennent pa\u00adtience;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  pour lesquels un homme ou une femme qui a beaucoup de titres est sup\u00e9rieur aux autres (<q>Ne m\u2019appelez pas Monsieur Meier, appelez-moi &#171;Herr Hofrat&#187;<\/q>);\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  avec lesquels on ne peut pas parler&nbsp;&#8211; m\u00eame si on a fait des \u00e9tudes d\u2019allemand&nbsp;&#8211;, parce qu\u2019il ne savent pas parler allemand eux-m\u00eames;&nbsp;&#8230;\n <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ap\u00adpelons-les &quot;Autrichiens&quot;!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In English, this text reads as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nHow to define the people,&nbsp;&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n  of which almost the whole world believes that they are basically neighbours of kangaroos and koalas, and of which the rest is sure that they risk suffocating in snow every winter;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  who spend the whole winter sking, and the rest of the time in a concert hall listening to classical music;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  who start their day with a few minutes yodeling outside their mountain hut;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  who always wear &quot;Lederhosen&quot; and &quot;Dirndln&quot;;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  for whom a city of more than a million inhabitants is a great metropolis;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  who eat &quot;Wiener Schnitzel&quot; and &quot;Sachertorte&quot;&nbsp;&#8211; seven days a week, three times a day;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  who rather lose patience than are patient;\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  for whom a man or woman with lots of titles is superior to others (<q>Do not call me <abbr title=\"Mister\">Mr.<\/abbr>&nbsp;Meier, call me &#171;Herr Hofrat&#187;<\/q>);\n <\/li>\n<li>\n  with whom you cannot have a conversation&nbsp;&#8211; even if you studied German&nbsp;&#8211;, because they do not know how to speak proper German themselves;&nbsp;&#8230;\n <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s call them &quot;Austrians&quot;!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A bit over a year ago, an Australian girl living in Austria also published an article which is quite close to the mark: &quot;<a class=\"www\" href=\"http:\/\/austrianadaptation.com\/28-ways-to-be-austrian\/\">28 ways to be Austrian<\/a>&quot;.
