Lithuanian Pilgrimage

On my way to the coast, I stopped in Šiauliai which is close to a very unique sight: the Hill of Crosses.

There, approximately 15,000 crosses (!) have been erected (by locals and foreigners alike). During the Sowjet period, there was even almost a war between the regime (who tore the crosses down, and burnt them) and the locals (who set new crosses up).

Today, it is a very impressive sight indeed.

After that, I also had a short stroll in Šiauliai itself.

During the train trip, I had the possibility to see some typical countryside houses: made of wood, rather old, and quite probably extremely hard to heat in winter.

Update

My travel guide seems to be hopefully out-of-date. Newer estimates suggest that there are up to 100,000 (!) crosses at the Hill of Crosses.
