On my way home, I made a stop at Grüner See (which I already wanted to visit for a long time). It might not have been neither the ideal weather nor season, but it was still worth the detour. Continue reading Green Lunch
Trip: Austria 2020
Hike, not bike
Originally, I wanted to rent a bike today and ride around Lake Ossiach. However, the rental place was closed. So, I had to change my plans and went hiking on Gerlitzen instead. In the afternoon, I also went stand-up paddling again. Continue reading Hike, not bike
Between a rock and a wet place
Today, I took a walk down memory lane: After about a quarter of a century, I visited Hochosterwitz Castle again. In the afternoon, I took advantage of the good weather, and went stand-up paddling on Lake Ossiach. Continue reading Between a rock and a wet place
Back to (late) summer
Today, I bid East Tyrol farewell. Luckily, this also meant that I left the snow behind. Instead, I was able to hike around Weißensee in a T-shirt – what a delight! Continue reading Back to (late) summer
Snow on the Alpine Pastures
After Virgen valley, Gschlöß valley, and (a short trip to) Defereggen valley in the past few days, I explored Kals valley today. I hiked up the Dabaklamm to Dorfer valley, and (almost) up to Dorfer lake. Continue reading Snow on the Alpine Pastures
A beautiful DecSeptember day in Gschlöß valley
Today was a really cold day: Just above freezing in the morning in the "valley" (if you still want to consider Matrei in Osttirol at just under 1000 metres above sea level to be in the valley), and a bit below freezing at the start of my hiking point (some further 500 metres higher up). Fortunately, it was sunny for the first two to three hours, which made my hike into Gschlöß valley a delight. Continue reading A beautiful DecSeptember day in Gschlöß valley
From winter with love
Winter is not only coming, it has already arrived in the mountains around Matrei in Osttirol this night: After a rainy day yesterday, the rain apparently changed to snow overnight. Nonetheless, I went on two shorter hikes in Virgen valley today. Continue reading From winter with love

The Großglockner High Fog Road
For the past two days, I visited the Großglockner High Alpine Road – for the first time in my life! Unfortunately, the weather was not perfect. So, I did not get to see Großglockner itself. However, it still were two nice days in the Hohe Tauern. Continue reading The Großglockner High Fog Road
Hochkönig is king
The last two days were dedicated to Hochkönigstock and Steinernes Meer. As I was feeling a bit lazy (and it was supposed to rain in the afternoon), I opted for the more relaxed (and shorter) option of a chairlift ride, and a hike at the top on both days. This gives you more time to enjoy the views from above – you just should not forget anything in your car! Continue reading Hochkönig is king
Zell at the mountain and the lake
The mountain/lake combo is back: Today, I was hiking around and stand-up paddling on Lake Zell. Continue reading Zell at the mountain and the lake
Tor is the door to Dachstein
The weather forecast promised dry and quite sunny conditions today (but not too warm). So, it was the ideal day for hiking. I decided to take the route over the Tor (German for "door"), a picturesque pass along the South face of the Dachstein massif. Continue reading Tor is the door to Dachstein
Water of a different kind
Originally, I had planned a lazy day today, as it was supposed to rain all day. However, the rain stopped already around noon. So, there was time for a short excursion, namely to Liechtensteinklamm. Continue reading Water of a different kind
Mondsee: Lather, rinse, repeat
Despite the weather forecast, I could repeat my mountain/lake combo once again. As yesterday, I was hiking around and paddling on Mondsee. Continue reading Mondsee: Lather, rinse, repeat
Fourth day, fourth lake
On the fourth day of my vacation, I visited my forth lake in the region – and this time, it was finally Mondsee! Continue reading Fourth day, fourth lake
Ups and downs at Attersee
As I have already postponed my planned visit to Mondsee yesterday, I did so again today. Instead, I went to Attersee for a hike around Wachtberg – and of course some stand-up paddling on the lake. Continue reading Ups and downs at Attersee
The mountain calls, and the lake as well
My original plan for today was a visit at Mondsee. However, in the morning I felt like going on a short hiking trip before. So, I hiked to the Wartenfels ruins, Schober, and Frauenkopf. From there, I had a gorgeous view of Lake Fuschl – which is why I drove there instead of Mondsee. Continue reading The mountain calls, and the lake as well
Stand-up paddling below Traunstein
My next vacation starts like the last one has ended: at the foot of Traunstein mountain – only this time, I was not hiking, I was stand-up paddling. Continue reading Stand-up paddling below Traunstein
