I spent the last three days in Montafon. Weather-wise, I had almost every season: clouds, bright sunshine, and rain. While some weather conditions made an exploration of the mountains somewhat difficult, I have still seen quite a bit – and I sure liked what I have seen! Continue reading The mountains of Montafon

Plan B in Bürs and Brand
Due to the bad weather, my initially planned hike to two summits near Bludenz was not really possible. Besides, I was not sure whether I had a third day with 1000 metres elevation gain in me. So, I tried to squeeze in two rather short hikes along the Alvier creek near Bürs: Bürs canyon and Kessel waterfall. Continue reading Plan B in Bürs and Brand
Lech, or: Wanting more (profit)
I am torn what to think about Lech: On the one hand, the location is absolutely gorgeous, and there are lots of hiking opportunities. On the other hand, you also come across some negative aspects of (winter) tourism. Continue reading Lech, or: Wanting more (profit)
Crowds and views on Kanisfluh
Today, I left the Rhine valley behind and moved to an accommodation in the Arlberg region. Instead of using the highway, I took the more windy, but also more scenic back roads through Bregenzerwald. This gave me the opportunity to also go hiking there. I decided for the hike to Kanisfluh, which proved to be quite popular – but for a good reason! Continue reading Crowds and views on Kanisfluh
Clouds at Lake Constance
Today, the weather unfortunately did not follow the weather forecast. It was actually supposed to be quite sunny. This is why I decided for a hike to the top of Pfänder mountain (with views of Bregenz and Lake Constance). Unforunately, though, it was quite cloudy, and I did not get the views I had hoped for. Continue reading Clouds at Lake Constance
Cycling along the Drau river
On the last (full) day of my holidays, I rented a bike to explore the area around Lake Klopein – and especially the Drau cycle path. Continue reading Cycling along the Drau river
A trip down memory lane gorge
After two days of exploring tourist destinations that I was not yet familiar with, it was time again for a trip down memory lane: with a visit to <span>Tscheppaschlucht gorge. Continue reading A trip down memory lane gorge
Petzen hike, or: Let’s have a look at Slovenia
Today, I explored the Petzen massif on the border of Austria and Slovenia. That also gave me the opportunity to see some of Slovenia – albeit only from the hiking trail hugging the border. Continue reading Petzen hike, or: Let’s have a look at Slovenia
Obir from below and above
For the past two days, I explored the Obir mountain range, both from in and on the mountain. Continue reading Obir from below and above
In, at, and on Lake Klopein
I am spending my first vacation this year at Lake Klopein. For the first one and a half days, I stayed around (and in/on) the very lake. Continue reading In, at, and on Lake Klopein
Stranger in my native land?
After spending most of my vacations further abroad in the past few years, the Corona crisis made me explore my home country Austria in more detail. Luckily, there are a lot of beautiful places to be found even that close to home.
Green Lunch
On my way home, I made a stop at Grüner See (which I already wanted to visit for a long time). It might not have been neither the ideal weather nor season, but it was still worth the detour. Continue reading Green Lunch
Hike, not bike
Originally, I wanted to rent a bike today and ride around Lake Ossiach. However, the rental place was closed. So, I had to change my plans and went hiking on Gerlitzen instead. In the afternoon, I also went stand-up paddling again. Continue reading Hike, not bike
Between a rock and a wet place
Today, I took a walk down memory lane: After about a quarter of a century, I visited Hochosterwitz Castle again. In the afternoon, I took advantage of the good weather, and went stand-up paddling on Lake Ossiach. Continue reading Between a rock and a wet place
Back to (late) summer
Today, I bid East Tyrol farewell. Luckily, this also meant that I left the snow behind. Instead, I was able to hike around Weißensee in a T-shirt – what a delight! Continue reading Back to (late) summer
Snow on the Alpine Pastures
After Virgen valley, Gschlöß valley, and (a short trip to) Defereggen valley in the past few days, I explored Kals valley today. I hiked up the Dabaklamm to Dorfer valley, and (almost) up to Dorfer lake. Continue reading Snow on the Alpine Pastures
A beautiful DecSeptember day in Gschlöß valley
Today was a really cold day: Just above freezing in the morning in the "valley" (if you still want to consider Matrei in Osttirol at just under 1000 metres above sea level to be in the valley), and a bit below freezing at the start of my hiking point (some further 500 metres higher up). Fortunately, it was sunny for the first two to three hours, which made my hike into Gschlöß valley a delight. Continue reading A beautiful DecSeptember day in Gschlöß valley
From winter with love
Winter is not only coming, it has already arrived in the mountains around Matrei in Osttirol this night: After a rainy day yesterday, the rain apparently changed to snow overnight. Nonetheless, I went on two shorter hikes in Virgen valley today. Continue reading From winter with love
Gorges and other gorgeous rock formations
As the weather was quite nice this morning, I made another visit to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe before going hiking in Raggaschlucht and Groppensteinschlucht. Continue reading Gorges and other gorgeous rock formations
The Großglockner High Fog Road
For the past two days, I visited the Großglockner High Alpine Road – for the first time in my life! Unfortunately, the weather was not perfect. So, I did not get to see Großglockner itself. However, it still were two nice days in the Hohe Tauern. Continue reading The Großglockner High Fog Road
