As I only had time for some of the highlights during my first visit to South Africa in 2018, I explored some other parts of the country in fall 2019, namely the Garden Route and the Wild Coast.

South Africa for Dummies
Back to Cape Town
Like last year, I ended my trip to South Africa in Cape Town. This time, I focused a bit more on the recent history of the city than the main tourist sites: I did some walking tours, and visited Robben Island and the District Six Museum. Continue reading Back to Cape Town
Relaxing, not hiking
Even though I could not do the hike I had planned, I enjoyed myself in Coffee Bay – I simply had two rather relaxing days there. Continue reading Relaxing, not hiking
Elephants Revisited
After two days of safari in a private game reserve, I continued to a state-owned National Park: Addo Elephant Park. As the name implies, there are quite a few elephants there. However, the park also boast a lot of other animals(including all of the "Big 5"). Continue reading Elephants Revisited
Safari Reloaded
Just over a year after my first safari in Madikwe, I have treated myself to another visit in a safari camp with some guided game drives: I have spent two nights in the Amakhala Game Reserve. Continue reading Safari Reloaded
Sunshine in Tsitiskamma
I really liked Storms River and the neighbouring Tsitsikamma National Park: a very homey hostel, nice fellow travellers, breathtakingly beautiful landscape – and sunshine! Continue reading Sunshine in Tsitiskamma
Pristine Nature’s Valley
Today, I had to plan around some rain showers again. So, I spent a time window of about five hours which was expected to be (mostly) dry in the beautiful Nature’s Valley. Continue reading Pristine Nature’s Valley
Birds and Monkeys and Predators! Oh My!
Today, it was again rather rainy. Therefore, I opted for a rather slow day, and visited only three animal sanctuaries: Birds of Eden, Monkeyland, and Jukani. Continue reading Birds and Monkeys and Predators! Oh My!
Mountains of seals
Today, I went on a hike that I was looking forward to since I started planning this trip: a hike in the Robberg Nature Reserve. Continue reading Mountains of seals
Knysna, or: Thank God for the wrong weather forecast
One advantage of the Garden Route is that everything is quite close together. However, in case of bad weather, this is also a disadvantage: You are likely to have bad weather everywhere. Yesterday, this was confirmed for me, unfortunately. Luckily, the sunshine returned much sooner than anticipated. So, I could enjoy Knysna in the sun today. Continue reading Knysna, or: Thank God for the wrong weather forecast
Wet in Wilderness
Considering the fact that it was raining quite a lot while I was in Wilderness, I was quite lucky with the weather, as I even caught a bit of sun. Still, I was not able to do everything on my agenda due to the inclement weather. Continue reading Wet in Wilderness
Four mountain passes for an adventure
My second stop on my trip was Oudtshoorn, in the semi-desert of the Little Karoo. Continue reading Four mountain passes for an adventure
Whale Wind ahead!
Just over a year after my first trip to South Africa, I am visiting the country again. This time, the focus is on the Garden Route and the Wild Coast. Today, however, I started with the so-called Whale Coast to the South-East of Cape Town. Continue reading Whale Wind ahead!
My first trip to Africa
For a very long time, Africa was still a (mostly) blank spot on my travel map. In fall 2018, I managed to change that with a trip to South Africa (and Lesotho).

(Deutsch) Die Perle Südafrikas
My three days in Cape Town were almost to short to get to know the city properly. Still, I can say that it will be difficult for any other South African city to compete with Cape Town: its location between Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain is extraordinary, it is quite safe (for South African standards), and there is lots to see. Continue reading (Deutsch) Die Perle Südafrikas
At the Cape of Good Hope
I have finally arrived at the last stop of my vaction in South Africa: Cape Town. From there, I took a day tour to the Cap Peninsula today, visiting Hout Bay, Cape Point, the Cape of Good Hope, and Boulder Beach. Continue reading At the Cape of Good Hope
Hiking at Amphitheatre
I spent the last two-and-a-half days in the Northern Drakensberg region. The first one-and-a-half days I did something which is (for me) quite extraordinary: nothing. Only yesterday, I went on a day hike to the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls. Continue reading Hiking at Amphitheatre
Hiking in the Drakensberg mountains
The second week of my stay in South Africa was dedicated to the Drakensberg mountains. I started with two days in Underberg, in the Southern Drakensberg region, where I went on some hikes. Continue reading Hiking in the Drakensberg mountains
