After flying back from Stewart Island, I did not feel like waiting for 23½ hours for a bus to Queenstown. So, I dediced to rent a car at the airport – for six days. Queenstown, the stop-over destination for bus travellers

Queenstown is the bus hub in the Southern part of the South Island. Most buses are scheduled to leave in the morning, and arrive in the evening. Therefore, as a bus traveler, you are almost forced to spend at least one night in the city if you want to explore the Southern part of the South Island.
