In spring 2017, seven years after my previous trip, I finally returned to the United States for another holiday. This time, I crossed the whole country by train: from New York via Chicago and Utah all the way to California.

Visiting a high security prison
In San Francisco, I am doing sightseeing in stages – in a seven-year-long cycle: In 2003, I walked the streets of the city for a day. In 2010, I only had time to (re)visit the most important sights. Today, I finally visited one of the biggest tourist attractions in town: Alcatraz. Continue reading Visiting a high security prison
Chicago, the real(ly not that) Windy City
Chicago has not quite lived up to its name as Windy City: It was less windy than New York. However, it was not really warmer. Still, I had a nice time in Chicago. Continue reading Chicago, the real(ly not that) Windy City
New York, the Windy City?
I have spent the past three days in New York – only three days, one is inclined to say: For the number of sights in the Big Apple, this is not much indeed. Additionally, the weather was not ideal: Even though it was better than the weather forecast led me to believe (just half a day of rain instead of all three), there was an icy wind blowing almost all the time.
Nonetheless, I got to see what I wanted: As this trip was my seventh stay in the city, I did not have to try to visit everything again, but could instead focus on the new sights and old favourites – and this is just what I have done. Continue reading New York, the Windy City?
Business Trip to Venice
I spent the past week on a business trip in Venice: I attended the Connectathon 2017, a "connectivity marathon" for testing the interoperability of health information systems
. As I extended my stay by a day, I also had the chance to see a bit of the city. Continue reading Business Trip to Venice
Vienna Ugly
After several months, it was again time to explore my home town Vienna a bit. Today, I decided for a rather unconvential approach: the walk "Vienna Ugly" by space and place. Continue reading Vienna Ugly
Hikeable Hong Kong
Hongkong is a true cultural melting pot: With its skyscrapers, it resembles an American city, and the doubledecker busses remind me of London. At the same time, the Chinese-Asian influence is very well noticable – and in the hinterland there are some great hiking opportunities. Continue reading Hikeable Hong Kong
Welcome to the People’s Crowd’s Republic of China
Beijing is big, very big even, and (rather unsurprisingly) full of Chinese. That it is also swamped by (mainly Chinese) tourists, however, came as a surprise to me.
Update from October 31, 2016
Additional pictures are available. Continue reading Welcome to the People’s Crowd’s Republic of China
A day in Graz
On my second day in Styria, I explored the Styrian capital Graz for a couple of hours. Continue reading A day in Graz
Semana Santa in Antigua
Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Antigua ius more of a Semana Loca (crazy week): Hundreds of thousands of (mainly Guatemaltecan) visitors come to this small town of 35,000 inhabitants. The reason for this are the numerous Easter processions which are said to be the most beautiful and impressive ones in all of Central America. Continue reading Semana Santa in Antigua
