My last full vacation day was dedicated to the nature highlight in Northern Ireland: Giant’s Causeway. Continue reading Giant Step(ping Stone)s
Trip: United Kingdom 2023
City of Conflicts
Due to a slight cold, I took it easy on my first two days in Belfast (the last stop on my vacation in the United Kingdom). Continue reading City of Conflicts
A new day, a new glen
As the title of this blog entry suggests, I have visited another famous Scottish valley today: Glen Nevis. Continue reading A new day, a new glen
Lost Valleys and Lakes
Today, I have visited one of the most famous and most-visited Scottish valleys: Glen Coe. Continue reading Lost Valleys and Lakes
Touristic Scotland
I have broken up today’s day of driving with two of the most-visited tourist attractions in Scotland: Eilean Donan and Loch Ness. Continue reading Touristic Scotland
Duirinish/Dunvegan Double
As I have been hiking quite a lot in the past two days, I only did some shorter hikes today. For that, I went to the Duirinish peninsula and to Dunvegan. Continue reading Duirinish/Dunvegan Double
Coire Lagan and the Tourist Fairy Pools
The Cuillin Hills are considered to be one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the United Kingdom. Because despite their rather low heights, the pointed peaks definitely deserve the designation “mountains”. Most of the peaks can even be reached only by very experienced mountaineers. Thankfully, there are also a few low-level hiking routes for “normal” hikers like me. I chose one of those for today: Coire Lagan. Continue reading Coire Lagan and the Tourist Fairy Pools
Around Trotternish
I have now reached the northernmost point of my trip through Scotland: the Isle of Skye. Today, I explored the Trotternish peninsula there. It offers quite a few touristic highlights – and is conveniently located pratically at the doorstep of my accommodation. Continue reading Around Trotternish
Accio Tourists!
Today was basically a driving day: I went from one Scottish Isle (Mull) to the next (Skye). In order to break up the drive, and to do at least some sightseeing, I did a short detour to Glenfinnan on the way. Continue reading Accio Tourists!
Castle and Coast
Today was actually the ideal hiking weather: bright blue sky basically the whole day. However, the (longer) hike I had in mind would have meant another hour’s drive (each way) on single lane roads, and I did not want to do that again. Instead, I visited a sight closer to my accommodation, Duart Castle, and simply combined that with a short hike. Continue reading Castle and Coast
Iona ist not dull either
On my second day on the Isle of Mull, I finally got to do what I had originally alread planned for the day before: a visit to the Isle of Iona. This small island was an important center for Celtic Christianity almost 1,500 years ago. However, it also has some nice beaches to offer (even for swimming, if you are brave enough – which I am not). Continue reading Iona ist not dull either
Mull is not dull
Getting there was quite stressful (after a ferry cancellation which made me drive three hours extra), but at least it was worth the effort: The Isle of Mull is indeed a beautiful place! Continue reading Mull is not dull
Three hours detour for a ferry crossing
Island Walk on Kerrera
Oban is the “Gateway to the Isles”. While one usually thinks of the large islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides when saying that, there are also some smaller islands in the immediate vicinity to be discovered. One of these I explored today: Kerrera, an island around seven kilometers long and two kilometers wide, located directly opposite of Oban. Continue reading Island Walk on Kerrera
Driving through time and space
Today, I already had to say goodbye to the Isle of Arran. My destination today was Oban. However, to break up the driving, I have selected a few interesting stops in between. weitergefahren. Um die Fahrt aber interessanter zu gestalten, habe ich mir ein paar nette Zwischenstopps ausgesucht. Continue reading Driving through time and space
Quintessentially Scottish?
I spent the last two days on the Isle of Arran. This island is often referred to as “Scotland in miniature”. I do not know Scotland well enough to be able to reliably confirm that – but it is certainly a picturesque island. Continue reading Quintessentially Scottish?
Sleeper train from London to London
Royal London
My second weekend in London was mostly dedicated to royal palaces: I have visited both Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace. Continue reading Royal London
The Towers of Dunkirk
Having already explored the city center of Lille in the past few afternoons (after work), I decided to go to Dunkirk today (on my first “real” vacation day). Continue reading The Towers of Dunkirk
Short Workation in Lille
Only three working days after being at Devoxx UK (in London) last week, my vacation (in London) was scheduled to begin. Therefore, flying home was out of the question. Instead, I spent these three working days in Lille – because a cozy apartment in the city center there is cheaper than a small single room on the outskirts of zone 2 of the Tube in London (even when including the train journey from and to London). Continue reading Short Workation in Lille
Devoxx UK 2023
I have spent the last few days in London, attending the Devoxx UK (a software developer conference). On the weekend, I then explored the city. Continue reading Devoxx UK 2023
