My name is Bernhard (or Bernie for short). I am child of the 1980s, and grew up in (and still live in) Vienna, Austria. My greatest passion is travelling. This blog is therefore mainly dedicated to my travelling adventures.

I just love to explore foreign (and, if possible, far away) countries. I have already spent my vacations on six different continents, and have (quite literally) travelled all around the globe: first in an eight-months-long RTW trip from September 2008 to May 2009, and again in another RTW trip from October 2023 to Februar 2024. But also during my regular vacations, I strive to get to know new places all over the world.

At the same time, I really enjoy my everyday life in my home town Vienna. Most of my friends live there, and I like to meet them e.g. for board game nights, going to the theater, or simply for a chat. In summer, I take advantage of Donauinsel for biking and inline skating, or for swimming in and stand-up paddling on Alte Donau. Finally, every once in a while, I also go hiking at the foothills of the Austrian alps close to Vienna – beautiful scenery cannot only be found abroad, after all!

When I am not roaming the world, I am spending my days as a software developer: After my studies of Technical Mathematics at UT Vienna, I have worked at PROFACTOR, a research company in Steyr (Austria), for three years, focusing on computer simulation and production planning. Since summer 2009, I am employed as a software developer at Dedalus HealthCare (formerly Agfa HealthCare), where I am working on the PACS client DeepUnity Diagnost (formerly IMPAX EE).

All good lakes come in threes fives or sixes

On the way to my next accommodation, I took the scenic route today: I went via Neder valley and Sellrain valley instead of taking the highway through Inn valley. At Kühtai saddle, I went on a hike to three lakes (though I stretched it out to visit five, with a view of a sixth one). Continue reading All good lakes come in threes fives or sixes

Sticking to in Ötz valley

Originally, I had looked up hikes in (almost) all of Western Tyrol for my stay in Ötz valley. However, I liked the view from my accommation (see title image) too much. So, I decided to stick to Ötz valley itself. In the end, I spent three days hiking there: around Piburg Lake, at Stuibenfall, and at Hochoetz. Continue reading Sticking to in Ötz valley

The Silvretta High Fog Road

I seem to have bad luck with High Alpine Roads: I always end up in the clouds. Last year, it was like that (at least partly) on the Großglockner High Alpine Road. Today, I drove from Vorarlberg to Tyrol on the Silvretta High Alpine Road. Again, the low clouds prevented me from seing any mountain tops. Fortunately, I was a bit more lucky further down the Paznaun valley, in Galtür. Continue reading The Silvretta High Fog Road

Plan B in Bürs and Brand

Due to the bad weather, my initially planned hike to two summits near Bludenz was not really possible. Besides, I was not sure whether I had a third day with 1000 metres elevation gain in me. So, I tried to squeeze in two rather short hikes along the Alvier creek near Bürs: Bürs canyon and Kessel waterfall. Continue reading Plan B in Bürs and Brand

Crowds and views on Kanisfluh

Today, I left the Rhine valley behind and moved to an accommodation in the Arlberg region. Instead of using the highway, I took the more windy, but also more scenic back roads through Bregenzerwald. This gave me the opportunity to also go hiking there. I decided for the hike to Kanisfluh, which proved to be quite popular – but for a good reason! Continue reading Crowds and views on Kanisfluh

Clouds at Lake Constance

Today, the weather unfortunately did not follow the weather forecast. It was actually supposed to be quite sunny. This is why I decided for a hike to the top of Pfänder mountain (with views of Bregenz and Lake Constance). Unforunately, though, it was quite cloudy, and I did not get the views I had hoped for. Continue reading Clouds at Lake Constance

A Day in a Princedom

I started my trip through Austria with a day in – Liechtenstein! This might seem illogical, but why not visit this small country when I am close by: I arrived this morning by train in Feldkirch, just across the border from Liechtenstein. So, I spent a day exploring some of its town – and in the end, also Feldkirch in Austria. Continue reading A Day in a Princedom
