Touring around Iceland
In summer 2014, a group of friend and me spent just under three weeks in Iceland. During our stay, we drove around the whole island in a rental car.
The Golden Circle
At the end of our trip, we did the tourist thing, and visited the sights of the Golden Circle: the waterfall Gullfoss, the geyser Strokkur, and Þingvellir. Continue reading The Golden Circle
Traversing the Highlands
Our holiday is coming to an end, so we are slowly returning to Reykjavík. However, we did not take the fastest route via the ring road. Instead, we took the Kjölur gravel road through the interior. Continue reading Traversing the Highlands
Iceland in older days and today
The past two days were rather relaxing. Today, we just visted the museum Glaumbær. Yesterday, we drove around the Tröllaskagi peninsula (where we also went on a short hike). Continue reading Iceland in older days and today
Fizz, Bubble, Steam, Stink (here too)!
The next stop of our tour (and, at the same time, the tourist attraction in the North of Iceland) was Mývatn. There, we explored the vulcanic features of this region. Continue reading Fizz, Bubble, Steam, Stink (here too)!
Canyons and Waterfalls
For the past one and a half days, we were hiking in the canyons of Ásbyrgi and Jökulsárgljúfur. The former is impressive thanks to its sheer size and the absence (!) of waterfalls, the latter boasts the magnificent Dettifoss. Continue reading Canyons and Waterfalls
Coastal road across the mountains
Driving along the coast for (almost) the whole day need not be boring. We enjoyed great views from the Hellisheiði hills, and on the Rauðanes peninsula. Continue reading Coastal road across the mountains
Waterfalls cold/warm
Today, we visited some waterfalls (both cold and warm), and a deep and narrow canyon. Continue reading Waterfalls cold/warm
Visiting Elves and Puffins
It is said that elves and trolls still live in Iceland. So, we visited Bakkagerði, the "capital of the Elves" – and the puffins that nest just a few kilometers way. Continue reading Visiting Elves and Puffins
Jöklasel is beautiful
Today, we said goodbye to Skaftafell National Park. However, this was not the last of the Icelandic glaciers for us, as we explored two more glacial areas on our way to the East Fjords. Continue reading Jöklasel is beautiful
Black waterfall and white glacier
After visiting some volcanic regions and the coast, we dedicated our next day to some glaciers in Skaftafell National Park. Continue reading Black waterfall and white glacier
Steep cliffs and black beaches
After spending two days with some volcanic features, we dedicated one day to the impressive cliffs and black beaches of the Southern coast. Continue reading Steep cliffs and black beaches
Water falls (from the sky)
Today, we wanted to go on a full-day excursion. However, due to bad weather (storm and rain), we decided to stay close to our accommodation. Continue reading Water falls (from the sky)
Of hot and not quite so hot springs
On our first day with our rental car, we continued the same way as we started on our half-day tour the day before: with regions of volcanic activity. Continue reading Of hot and not quite so hot springs
Iceland under ground
While we were in Reyjavík, we went on a half-day tour to a very impressive lava cave. Continue reading Iceland under ground
The northernmost capital of the world
In the next two-and-a-half weeks, I will explore a country that has been on my travel wish list for quite some time: Iceland. Unlike usually, however, I am not travelling alone, but with a group of four friends. Together, we will tour the island by rental car. Continue reading The northernmost capital of the world
