After two years of Corona, it was finally time for a trip abroad again in early Summer 2022 – though still quite close to home: I spent three weeks exploring South Tyrol and Slovenia.

One, two, and gone!
Today, I said goodbye to South Tyrol and continued to Slovenia, where I will spend the second (slightly shorter) part of my vacation. On the way, however, I made a a final stop in Italy. Again, I followed the motto of the last two days: A lake is needed, or better yet, more! Continue reading One, two, and gone!
Prags, not Prague
Today, on my last (full) day in South Tyrol, I visited another tourist hot spot: Pragser Wildsee, also known by its Italian name Lago di Braies. Continue reading Prags, not Prague
Look at this lake!
Today, the weather was supposed to be a bit more unstable again. However, the latest days with “changeable” weather actually turned out quite nice. So, I decided to go on a little hike nonetheless – just down in the valley: I hiked to and around Toblacher See, after spotting it yesterday from the bus window. Continue reading Look at this lake!
Lots of tourists at Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Today, I went on one of the most famous hikes in the region: around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. As it is a very well-known hike, I was definitely not the only one with this plan. Still, this area has its good reputation for a reason! Continue reading Lots of tourists at Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Stepping stones
The weather today (blue skies with sunshine) basically demanded another hike. I decided to go up to Speikboden, which is located already quite near the Austrian border. Continue reading Stepping stones
Hiking in South Tyrol 201
Today, the weather forecast was again more suitable for hiking: still some clouds and a bit cooler, but at least no rain. So, I dedicated my time to the Dolomite mountains again. Again, I chose the modus operandi that I already applied two days ago: going up by cable car, and then a leisurely hike at 2000+ meters above sea level. Continue reading Hiking in South Tyrol 201
Busloads of tourists in Bolzano
As today was supposed to be another rather rainy day, I opted for city sightseeing instead of hiking: I went to Bozen (as it was least likely to rain there). Continue reading Busloads of tourists in Bolzano
Hiking in South Tyrol 101
When you are researching hiking areas in South Tyrol, you will stumble across Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi) rather sooner than later. This alpine meadow is very well-known – and for a good reason, as I could see for myself on today’s hike. Continue reading Hiking in South Tyrol 101
More tourists in Merano
Originally, I wanted to visit Merano today on my way from one accommodation to the next. However, as the weather forecast promised rain, I decided to go a day early. So, I could enjoy Meran in sunshine – even though the weather today did not turn out to be that bad. Continue reading More tourists in Merano
Exploring Val Venosta
It is finally time to travel again! I am still limiting myself to (Central) Europe, though: I will be spending my time in South Tyrol and Slovenia. I started my trip with a few days in Val Venosta, in the West of South Tyrol. Continue reading Exploring Val Venosta
Naples and the two-thousand-year egg
I spent my last day in Naples strolling through the streets, and visiting the Castel dell’Ovo, the Egg Castle. Continue reading Naples and the two-thousand-year egg
The ruins of Herculaneum
Today, it was rather rainy. So, I decided to forgo my planned hike on the Sorrento peninsula, and visited the ruins of Herculaneum and the National Museum of Archeology in Naples instead. Continue reading The ruins of Herculaneum
Hiking the Amalfi Coast
Today, I visited the Amalfi Coast. I spent most of my time hiking the "Sentiero degli Dei", the Path of the Gods. Continue reading Hiking the Amalfi Coast
The ruins of Pompeii
Today, I explored the ruins of Pompeii. I was amazed by the sheer size of the excavations – it is truly a city! Continue reading The ruins of Pompeii
See Naples and (don’t) die
I am taken advantage of today’s national holiday, and am spending an extended weekend in Southern Italy – more precisely, in and around Naples. Continue reading See Naples and (don’t) die
In the crowded streets of Verona
At the third (and last) stop of my short stay in Italy, I discovered why my previous stops were not too crowded: Apparently, all tourists are in Verona. Without doubt, this city was the most popular of the ones visited by me. Continue reading In the crowded streets of Verona
The Towers of Bologna
I took advantage of today’s public holiday in Austria, and went to Italy for the extended weekend. Today, I explored Bologna. Continue reading The Towers of Bologna
Business Trip to Venice
I spent the past week on a business trip in Venice: I attended the Connectathon 2017, a "connectivity marathon" for testing the interoperability of health information systems
. As I extended my stay by a day, I also had the chance to see a bit of the city. Continue reading Business Trip to Venice
The ASMC 2007 at Lago Maggiore
I spent the last week in Stresa on the shores of Lago Maggiore on occasion of the "Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Conference" (ASMC). Of these seven days, the first four were just leisure days (on my own expenses). During this time, I explored the region together with a colleague from the FH Steyr. Having enjoyed my stay very much, I can only recommend the Lago Maggiore as a holiday destination.
