As a heat wave is currently hitting Europe, I decided to spend an extended weekend in the mountains. So, I enjoyed three days of bright sunshine on Dachstein plateau at about 1,800 metres above sea level. Even though the afternoons were also quite hot up there, it was definitely much better than the 35° C (and more) in Vienna. Continue reading Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Mountains

Hiking the Ötschergraben
Today, I was hiking in Lower Austria. More precisely, I explored the Ötschergraben. With just under two hours drive from Vienna, this is at the limit of what is acceptable for a day trip. However, it was definitely worth it. Continue reading Hiking the Ötschergraben
In the Clouds at Wolfgangsee
As last Thursday was a National holiday in Austria, I took the opportunity to spend an extended weekend in Salzkammergut – my first visit ever to this region! Unfortunately, the weather was not that good. So, I could not fully enjoy the gorgeous landscape in all its glory. Continue reading In the Clouds at Wolfgangsee
Annapurna Sanctuary
For two weeks, I was hiking in the Annapurna region (on a group tour). After that, I explored Kathmandu valley for just under a week (on my own).
Taking the scenic route to hiking
Actually, I wanted to go to Nagarkot today. This village is located at approximately 2,000 metres above sea level, and you are supposed to have a great view of the Himalayas from there. What is more, there are some nice hikes in the surrounding hills. However, I did not manage to get there. Still, I managed to get to a hiking trail in the end – just not the one I originally planned to. Continue reading Taking the scenic route to hiking
The Stairs of Cirith Ungol Annapurna
As already mentioned, I have been on a ten-day hike in the Annapurna region: from Birethanti via Poon Hill to the Annapurna Base Camp and back. For a considerable part, the path consisted of thousands of steps which sometimes made the walk a bit strenous. Still, it was simply fantastic! Continue reading The Stairs of Cirith Ungol Annapurna
A Valley at 4,130 Meters Above Sea Level
Today we reached Annapurna Base Camp. It is situated at 4,130 meters above sea level amidst numerous peaks of 6,000+ meters height – a truly breathtaking sight!
Teahouse Trekking in the Annapurna Region
I am currently on a ten-day hike in Nepal. The first part of this hike is a classical “teahouse trek” (i.e. hiking from one tea/guest house to the next). We have been hiking through rhododendron forest and enjoyed the views of the surrounding mountains, e.g. from Poon Hill, a popular vantage point.
Mountains and Monasteries of the Caucasus
In fall 2014, I explored the Caucasus for two weeks. During that time, I was not only hiking in the mountains. I also explored lots of churches and monasteries, some of which were truly spectacular.
A worthy last day in Georgia
A church high up amidst the mountains of the Great Caucasus – how could the last destination of my stay in Georgia and Armenia be more appropriate? Continue reading A worthy last day in Georgia
