The karst hills of Yanshuo are indeed extraordinary – I have never seen anything like it. The numerous hills are dotting the landscape, in seemingly endless rows, one after the other. We have explored this region by bike and on some short hikes. Continue reading The surreal mountains of Yangshuo

Happy Anniversary, FNS!
Today is the 250th Friday Night Skating! Of course, I am participating – along with a record crowd of three to four thousand skaters and bikers.
Cycling the Old Coach Road
Today, I decided to use some other means of transport than usual: I biked the Old Coach Road, which was the link between the Northern and Southern rail branches (before completion of the train link in the early 1900s). Continue reading Cycling the Old Coach Road
In the Soviet Military Area
In Soviet times, the island of Saaremaa was a military area to which access was restricted even for Estonians. Today, no signs of that remain – other than lots of untouched nature. Continue reading In the Soviet Military Area
Rainy, Cloudy, Go!

The Last Primeval Forest in Europe
The last two days I spent in Bialowieża which is home to the (allegedly) last primeval forest in all of Europe. I do not know whether this is true or not, but it is definitely a very beautiful region. Continue reading The Last Primeval Forest in Europe
Cycling the Rallarvegen
After more than six years, I finally returned to Norway. My vacation already started with the first highlight: a two-day bike trip on Rallarvegen – even with bright sunshine (at least on the first day)! What more could you ask for? Continue reading Cycling the Rallarvegen
Moab, the Outdoor Mecca of the United States
Originally, Moab was on my wishlist only because of its proximity to Arches NP (which I really wanted to visit). As it turned out, the small town has a lot more to offer than "just" one national park. Continue reading Moab, the Outdoor Mecca of the United States
